Frequently Asked Questions About Dr. David Spangler
Yes, Dr. Spangler is currently accepting new patients.
Gynecologists do not automatically test for STDs at every visit. Testing depends on your age, symptoms, risk factors, and the type of appointment. During your visit, your provider will review your health history and recommend appropriate screenings as part of personalized care. Many patients choose routine or preventive testing, which can be requested at any time. Our gynecology clinic focuses on confidential, judgment-free care and clear information so you can make informed decisions about your reproductive health.
Most insurance plans cover gynecology visits, including preventive care such as annual exams and certain screenings. Coverage can vary based on your plan, the services provided, and whether the visit is preventive or problem-focused. Our office works closely with patients to verify benefits and explain coverage details before or after an appointment, helping you avoid surprises while accessing essential health care.
Yes, you can go to the gynecologist during your period. Many visits, including consultations and discussions about symptoms or ongoing conditions, can still take place. Some gynecology exams may be adjusted depending on flow and testing needs, but your provider will guide you. Our clinic is committed to respectful, patient-centered care, ensuring patients feel comfortable regardless of timing.
IA midwife and an obgyn both provide pregnancy-related care, but their training and roles differ. OB-GYNs are medical doctors trained in obstetrics and gynecology, managing both routine and high-risk situations. Midwives specialize in low-risk pregnancy, labor, and postpartum care, often emphasizing a holistic approach. Some patients choose collaborative models that include both, depending on their health needs and birth preferences. Our team helps guide patients through options that best support safe, informed care.

Most patients should see their obgyn once a year for preventive care, even if they feel healthy. Annual visits support early detection, ongoing gynecology health, and conversations about changing needs over time. Some individuals may need more frequent appointments based on age, symptoms, pregnancy, or existing conditions. Our Birmingham practice focuses on consistent, personalized care to support long-term health at every stage of life.
