Patient Approach & What to Expect

Appointment Style

We understand that OB/GYN appointments can feel personal and sometimes even a little intimidating. Our goal is to create a comfortable, respectful experience where you feel informed, heard and cared for.

Communication

Every visit begins with listening. We will review your medical history, discuss your concerns, and answer questions before moving forward with any exam or testing. Your voice matters, and your goals guide your care.

Shared Decision-Making

If an exam, test, or procedure is recommended, we will explain:

  • Why it is being done
  • What it involves
  • What you may feel
  • What the results mean

You’re encouraged to ask questions at any time.

Comfort & Privacy

Your privacy and comfort are priorities. Exams are performed with professionalism and sensitivity. Chaperones are available any time, and you are always in control. You can pause or stop the exam if needed.

Personalized Care Planning

Before you leave, we will review next steps together. This may include:

  • Preventive screenings
  • Lab work or imaging
  • Medication options
  • Lifestyle recommendations
  • Follow-up scheduling

Our goal is for you to leave with clarity and confidence in your care plan.

Timely Follow-Up

We communicate test results promptly and ensure you understand what they mean. If additional care is needed, we will guide you through the process.

When Should You See a Gynecologist?

You should see a gynecologist when you begin menstruating, become sexually active, or have concerns related to reproductive or pelvic health. Regular visits support preventive care, including screenings, gynecology exams, and guidance for changing life stages. Many patients also schedule visits for contraception counseling, menstrual concerns, or symptoms affecting daily life. At our gynecology clinic, we provide personalized care for women of all ages, focusing on comfort, education, and long-term health. An appointment is also recommended if you experience pain, abnormal bleeding, or other conditions that need evaluation by specialists who deliver comprehensive care.

Do I Need to Go to a Gynecologist After a Total Hysterectomy?

Yes. Even after a total hysterectomy, ongoing gynecology care remains important. Follow-up visits help monitor pelvic health, hormonal changes, and overall wellness. Depending on your history, your provider may recommend periodic exams and preventive services tailored to your needs. Our gynecology-focused office supports patients with continued care, education, and individualized guidance to maintain long-term health after surgery.

Can You Go to a Gynecologist Appointment on Your Period?

Yes, you can keep your appointment during your period. Most gynecology visits, including consultations and many exams, can still be completed. If a specific test needs to be rescheduled, your provider will let you know. Our clinic prioritizes respectful care and clear communication, ensuring patients feel comfortable and supported regardless of timing. If you have concerns, our office can provide additional information before your visit.

Can My OB-GYN Do a Prenatal Paternity Test?

In many cases, your obgyn can discuss prenatal paternity testing options and refer you to appropriate medical testing providers. These tests are highly specialized and focus on fetal and maternal safety while providing accurate medical results. During your visit, your provider will review available services, explain benefits and limitations, and help coordinate next steps so patients receive informed, compassionate care.

When Is the First OB-GYN Visit When Pregnant?

The first visit typically occurs around 8–10 weeks of pregnancy. This initial appointment includes confirmation of pregnancy, a review of medical history, and planning for ongoing obstetrics and gynecology care. Early prenatal visits allow your provider to address questions, outline recommended services, and support both physical and emotional health from the start. Our team in Birmingham is dedicated to providing attentive, patient-centered care throughout pregnancy.
